Dr. Matthew McPhee

Neuropsychologist

Dr. Matthew McPhee is a Neuropsychologist registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. He works with adults between the ages of 18 and 90+. He has extensive experience in cognitive assessment and intervention, as well as experience with individual and group-based psychotherapy. He has extensive expertise working with individuals suffering from a variety of neurocognitive disorders, including mild cognitive impairment, moderate to severe memory disorders, executive dysfunction, and dementia. His expertise also includes helping his clients deal with caregiver burden, age-related memory changes, and other conditions that affect, or are affected by, changes to brain function. Under the supervision of Dr. Lemire-Rodger, Dr. McPhee will deepen his expertise working with individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, concussion, trauma, and other conditions that affect emotional and/or cognitive well-being.

At its foundation, Dr. McPhee’s approach to client care is driven by a client-centered approach. Working collaboratively with clients, Dr. McPhee integrates principles and techniques from cognitive intervention, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Humanistic Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, to effectively address client concerns. His approach to therapy is rooted in evidence-based practice, being supported by contemporary research. He works with clients to translate the most up-to-date research to be useful in each clients’ unique circumstance.

Dr. McPhee presently works as a Neuropsychologist at Baycrest Hospital. There, he works with individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and their family members, to optimize brain health, improve real-world memory functioning, and navigate the adjustment to living well with MCI. He completed his PhD at the University of Toronto (Scarborough Campus) in Clinical Psychology. He has trained at numerous academic hospitals, including Baycrest, Sunnybrook, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), and Toronto Western Hospital. Following his PhD, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. Brian Levine at Baycrest, where he studied the implementation of a virtual cognitive rehabilitation program (Goal Management Training). Dr. McPhee has published numerous scientific articles and presented research at professional conferences spanning topics such as cognitive intervention, cognitive aging, and the intersection of COVID-19, depression, and alcohol use. His passion is translating these findings to help his clients.
